If a slotted finished wood base piece impossible, consider another option. Have a professional cut the bench down three-fourths of an inch, and then provide four 1” x 4” x 12” boards--two for each side of the bench. This will raise the bench three-fourths of an inch higher than normal (by using two boards under each side), or bring it to the normal height (by using one board under each side), or lower it three-fourths of an inch below normal (by using no boards). If this is still too high, remove another three-fourths of an inch from the bench and provide another set of two 1” x 4” x 12” boards--one more for each side.
Note: a wooden support running from left to right just above the pedals is often present in benches. Making the bench shorter may require that this piece also be modified to avoid hitting the pedalboard.
Organ technicians may know of other effective ways of making height adjustments to an existing bench.
