3. Independence of line. The integrity of each line must be preserved. That means that the releases and legato in one line may not be influenced by the activity of another. When independence problems occur, the freezing technique is a quick and effective solution.
If you notice a break (nonlegato) where it should be legato, feel a little more weight in that hand or foot. Be on the alert for this when there is a phrase break (comma) or a break between repeated notes in only one part.
Also, if you hear blurring (overlegato) between any two notes, shift a little weight out of the hand. Watch out for overlegato wherever a large skip appears in the line.
