General Pistons

General Combination Pistons (“Generals”) can set and recall combinations of stops on all divisions of the organ.

If the console contains only one numbered set of thumb pistons, they will be general pistons, not locals, and will usually be centered underneath the manuals. If there is more than one set, the generals will usually be located to the far left underneath the manuals, and the locals will be centered. General pistons are more common than local pistons.

Now recall the Great and Pedal Principal stops already mentioned either by hand or by using the Great local and Pedal local pistons that you set earlier. Next add a Swell chorus:

  • Bourdon 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Octave 4' (or another stop marked 4')
  • Flūte a Bec 2' (or another stop marked 2')

Set the stops of all three divisions on general piston 5. Now cancel, and then press general 5 to recall them.
