10. The normal POSITION FOR THE EXPRESSION PEDAL (“swell pedal”) is fully open. The normal position for the CRESCENDO PEDAL is fully closed.

One of the first things you should do when seating yourself at the organ is to open any expression pedals fully and to close the crescendo pedal completely, if present. This is the “default” or normal position for the two different types of pedals.

Pipe organs are voiced with all expression boxes fully open. An expressive division is intended to be played with the boxes fully open unless you want to close the box partly or fully for expressive purposes.
