Decision Making

A Common Goal

As we discuss the various factors that influence the choice of touch, one goal should guide every decision: making music.

If applying any of these factors seems to detract from what would otherwise be a natural musical result, then perhaps it is being carried too far. It is easy to fall into a “camp” that follows one principle or another to the letter, but that ignores the general musical result.

One way of avoiding this trap is to play often for other musicians (including non-organists) and listen to their impressions. If music truly is a universal language, organ music should be convincing to musicians of all types.
