Introduction

The studies referred to in this lesson are found in the “Hymn Playing” section of the workbook under “Hymn Projects 2 and 3.” These and others are also found in Easy Organ Hymn Settings. They are three-part transcriptions of four-part hymns, with legato fingering and pedaling:

  • The soprano part, in its original form, is played by the right hand.
  • The bass part, in its original form, is played in the pedals.
  • A new middle part is given for the left hand.

This lesson and these studies involve only the left hand and the pedal parts. The first and easiest setting, the hymn tune “Dennis” (“Blest Be the Tie”, "How Gentle God's Commands") will be used in all examples in this lesson. If you wish, you may use the tenor and bass parts of any simple four-part hymn. Carefully supply fingering and pedaling, and then adapt the directions in this lesson.
