4. UPPER. The upper portion should be lightweight and flexible, and the shoes should brush against one another easily. Avoid shoes that tend to stick together, catch, or squeak when brought into contact with one another. Polishing shoes sometimes causes sticking and/or squeaking, as do some patent leathers.
