When one foot substitutes for another, the risk of playing a wrong note is increased. However, substitution is useful when enough time is available to execute it. In addition, sometimes substitution is the only possible way of executing a passage.
Crossing or other more direct methods (like straddling the third by a single foot in the example to the right) should be favored over substitution when feasible.
