As you mark pedaling for difficult passages in hymns or in organ literature, you will discover that there is more than one solution to particular problems. Sometimes one solution is as good as another, but at other times one solution is clearly the best.
Following are three general guidelines to bear in mind when marking difficult pedal parts. Each one will be explained separately:
1. REDUCE MOTION
Most organists consider the reducing motion to be one of the most important elements in good organ playing. Since it takes less time to travel a shorter distance, you will play more evenly and with greater rhythmic control when your pedaling allows for no wasted motion.
