Knees and Ankles

1. KNEES TOGETHER

Keep the knees touching (or at least together as far as comfortably possible) whenever the two feet are playing keys separated by an octave or less.

After establishing the position of the bench and body, keeping the knees together is the second link in the chain that will be a useful aid in locating pedal keys. With the knees together, the muscles learn the “feel” of various intervals between the two feet, especially the octave. The feet work independently from the knee down, rather than from the hips. The result is a smaller margin of error.

Although keeping the knees together may be uncomfortable at first, your muscles will strengthen as you use them regularly, and you will enjoy the benefits. If you are unable to bring them together with a reasonable degree of comfort, bring them as close together as is feasible.
