Inappropriate Use
Extensive use of the tremulant, in theater organ style, is usually
inappropriate in church organ playing. Following are some of the
most common misuses:
- CONGREGATIONAL HYMN PLAYING
Never use the tremulant when accompanying congregational hymns--even in the more meditative hymns.
- LOUD COMBINATIONS
The only appropriate use of the tremulant in loud stop combinations is in theater style.
- TOO FREQUENT USE
Even appropriate tremulant use, if applied too often, can become tiring.
- WITH CELESTES
Celestes have a gentle tremolando of their own. Adding another
is unnecessary except in the case of "the grand celeste," which is beyond the scope of this course.
