All Swells

Some organs have a thumb piston or stop labeled “All Swells.” This device places all expressive divisions under the control of a single expression pedal--the Swell. If your organ has more than one expression (not crescendo) pedal, try the following:

Pull a combination of Great (or Choir) stops:

  • Principal 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Octave 4' (or another stop marked 4')
  • Super Octave 2' (or another stop marked 2')

Pull a complementary chorus of Pedal stops:

  • Principal 16' (or another stop marked 16')
  • Octave 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Choral Bass 4' (or another stop marked 4')

Hold a chord on the Great (or Choir) and a note on the Pedal while closing and opening the Swell expression pedal. You should hear no change of volume.

Next, engage the “All Swells” piston or stop tab and try it again. You should now hear a change of volume.
