Playing on the Choir (Positiv)

On a three-manual organ the third manual is added below the Great. The Great, therefore, becomes the middle manual, and the Swell the upper manual.

The newly added third (lowest) manual is called either the Choir or the Positiv. If this third manual division of pipework is enclosed in its own “swell” box, it is called a Choir division, and is provided with another expression pedal to the left of the Swell expression pedal. If the pipework is exposed, it is called a Positiv division, and no expression pedal is needed.

Pull a chorus of stops on the Choir (Positiv):

  • Bourdon 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Octave 4' (or another stop marked 4')
  • Flute a Bec 2' (or another stop marked 2')
