Making Music

Choices Left to the Organist

There is rarely any indication in the score that would guide you towards the best way of connecting repeated notes throughout any one hymn. There are several reasons for this:

  • Modern NOTATION is unable to specify precisely all of the nuances that are required for truly musical performance.
  • Composers expect performers to use their MUSICAL JUDGEMENT in making such decisions.
  • Many VARIABLES can or must be considered by the performer: acoustics, tempo, volume, proximity of organ to congregation, period of composition, etc.
