The matter of COMMON TONES deserves special consideration. We have already dealt with common tones that occur between the soprano and alto. Common tones between the alto and tenor or between tenor and bass cannot be dealt with so systematically, since the integrity of the soprano part is not involved.
Only one such case occurs in this hymn (see blue line). You can choose either to tie or to break based on the desired effect. For verses 1 or 2, breaking creates a “breath” that could help clarify the text. For verses 3 or 4, tying will contribute towards a sense of continuity. Of course, the repeated notes and common tones in the other parts, and their position relative to the meter must also be considered. (Meter will be discussed on the next screen.)
For the best result, be sure to notice common tones and decide how to treat them based on textual and musical considerations. Do not leave it to chance.
