Because hymn playing is so widely practiced, many differing approaches are used. To state that any one of them is the correct approach would be narrow minded. However, certain facets of hymn playing are widely accepted.
OrganTutor Organ 101 uses a “mainstream approach” to hymn playing. Of course, other approachs may be pursued, but it is recommended that you master this approach thoroughly before branching out into others. It will serve as a solid foundation for learning hymns as well as much of the organ literature.
At Brigham Young University, where OrganTutor originated, this approach is used on many levels: from the Group Organ program and the Independent Study organ courses through the foundational training of organ performance majors.
