Fingering & Pedaling

The amount of fingering and pedaling that you should write in the score will depend on:

  • LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY. A piece that you can sight-read may need little fingering and pedaling, but a piece that offers a greater challenge may require much more.
  • MUSICAL PATTERNS. Pieces that rely heavily on passages that “lie well under the hands” or that use familiar patterns (such as scales or arpeggios) may need fewer markings.
  • NATURAL ABILITY. A few organists have the ability to perceive instantly at sight the fingering needed to execute even difficult passages. They will need little fingering or pedaling. Beware--this is a very rare gift!
