Preparing for Performance

CALM THE NERVES

Make a list of the things that make you nervous when you perform. One by one, devise a plan to neutralize them, and then let it happen. For example:

  • “My teacher is out there.” Ask your teacher to tell you whose side he or she is on. Believe the answer.
  • “Oh, there's so-and-so. I wish I hadn't seen him.” Do not look directly into the audience. Look just above their heads, focusing on no one.
  • “I just know I'm going to make a mistake.” Listen intently to the music coming from the pipes, focusing on the creative and beautiful aspects of the performance. Trust your preparation to take care of the technical matters. Allow your critical self to serve only as a mute observer during the performance, postponing any evaluation until long after the performance.
