Position: Left-Right

Center on Pedal D

The exact pedal key on which you should center yourself is not standard. OrganTutor recommends centering yourself on the second (“tenor”) pedal D for several reasons:

  • It allows a symmetrical orientation outward both directions from D to nearby sharp key groups and to the gaps.
  • It is easy to center yourself on D: position the two feet on tenor C and E by feeling the gaps above (E and F) with the right foot and below (B and C) with the left.

Other organ teachers recommend centering on the E just above the second pedal D.

More important than which left-right position you choose is that you use the same position each time you sit at the organ. Be consistent!
